D4 or R4?

We bought what is supposed to be a D4. The decal on the left side gas tank says so and on the front of the radiator there is an off-center D4, but there is a letter or something that's been ground off and painted over. The Tractor number is 6G37, suggesting an R4, but it's a diesel tractor with a handcrank pony engine. A tin plate on the left side of the engine says something about the fuel system and has a 7-P number. Any ideas what we've got?

On the Radiator Logo:
The R part of the RD4 designation was dropped during production of 1939 and became the D4. The 4G5736 sr. no. was a 1937 unit. Someone may have tried to "update/match" the later model designation by grinding off the "R".

The R4 -6G series is a gas engine produced from 1941-1944
The RD4 - 4G series uses the D4400 engine and was produced from 1936-1939 followed by the 7J series.
Yes the serial numbers originally matched but you have the diesel D4400 engine mounted up to a original 6G transmission case. Nothing wrong with that once you know what you have.

So, the R4 Series 6G is a Diesel with a handcrank gas pony engine? Why would someone put D4 decals on it and then the front of the radiator have something ground off, leaving the D4 intact? How would I know if it is maybe a newer D4 engine? Any idea when the 6G was made? Thanks for your response.

Is the starting engine mounted behind the diesel or is it along side? How many cylinders does the diesel engine have?

The pony engine is to the rear of the diesel engine. It is a 4-cylinder diesel.

Thanks for direction to the Tractor Number on the engine. I couldn't find it. It had been painted and was tough to see. I found the Tractor Number 4G5736 there. So on the back of the tractor the Tractor Number is 6G37. Should these match? Or did they originally?

HI I am sorry the r4-- 6g is a 4 cylinder gas engine and if yours is a diesel with poney that should be a d4 serie rd4 and you should find the serie number near the small housing transmission cluch and on the back main housing left side near the pto hole.
