Our 22 Catepiller had been starting fine until about 6 months ago. Now it will not start. We have changed the spark plugs. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Hi Troy,
A compression check might be in order if you haven't done one. Possibility of burned valves if this non-start condition came on gradually. You might also check valve operation and lash.
Good luck, Pete

I am no ignition expert but when the old stuff starts acting up I often find its best to toss out all the old stuff and replace with fresh, cap rotor points condenser. That said if it comes from or for cat they will make you bleed. I just ordered a cap for my intermittent firing pony motor D4 and it cost $86; I feel your pain. In my case it was sanded perfect contact across the cap and yet it wouldn't spark more than occasionally. Makes a strong case for electronic ignition doesn't it?

Troy,
You don't say if there is spark at the plugs. Is there fuel? Plugged line?
Check the basics first.
Pete

Hi Pete - sorry about that, yes there is fuel (not plugged), and spark at the plugs.

SOMETIMES YOU MAY HAVE SPARK ON THE PLUG UNTIL IT IS PLACED UNDER COMPRESSION AND THEN THERE ISN'T ENOUGH STRONG SPARK TO IGNITE THE FUEL. YOU MIGHT WANT TO CHECK THE POINTS AND CONNECTIONS IN THE MAG. ANY CORROSION OR DICOLORATION CAN AFFECT THE STRENGTH OF YOUR SPARK. YOU CAN ALSO RUN A RESISTANCE CHECK ON YOUR PLUGS. THEY SHOULD HIGH RESISTANCE OR OPEN TO THE OUTSIDE OF THE PLUG. GOOD LUCK....

If you got good spark...and are getting fuel, then it just about has to be the valves. I wouldnt think it is a burned valve as it ran fine the last time you had it running, but more a stuck valve or valves. if it was sitting outside maybe water got down the exaust pipe. SOmetimes just moisture in the air will be enough to stick a valve. A compression check is the first thing I would do to find out what the problem If low compresion is the culprit, dump a little oil ( a few good squirts from the oil can will be sufficient) . It the compression goes up, them the problem will be a bad ring or rings. If there is no change, , this indicates a stuck or burned valve. If a valve is suspect, remove the cover and check them for movement while turning the engine. Sometimes a stuck valve can be worked loose but most likely the head will have to come off.Greg
