How much trouble do I have? I was adjusting the brakes on my dozer the other day and noticed considerable movement.(the whole steering clutch was moving up and down when pulling on the brake)It runs fine, turns good,if the pilot bearing is out it looks to be a major job. What more will I tear up if I keep running it?

I looked it over close today, drained the final no metal of any kind.(ran a magnet) If it were the pinion bearing it should knock the oil seal out.I am begining to think it is the pilot bearing that runs on the shaft from the ring gear. Still looking, could the splines on the pinion gear be this worn or the steering clutch housing leting it work up approx. 1/2"? No metal pieces or grinding sounds, nothing in the bottom steering clutch housing. I wish allis-chalmer and International still made dozers. I just hate to work on JD.

I don't see what difference it makes that IH or AC no longer make small crawlers - neither does Deere. Since you're working on a early 1960s machine, there are many ACs, IHs, etc. of the same vintage available it that's what you prefer. But - you can certainly find the same problems if not worse with the other brands. I was a Deere mechanic for most of my life and worked on 2010 crawlers when they were new. Yeah, they had some shortcomings, and the 450 series that followed has steering-clutches that are somewhat easier to get at. I've got several Oliver Cletracs, IH T-340s and 500s, Deere 1010s, 350s and 2010s, and an Allis Chalmers HD4 and HD6. They all get similar problems. In fact, I recently had my Allis HD4 apart and I think fixing it was about as bad as it can get. Clutches all bad - warped worn, and full of oil. Bolts and fingers broken on the steering-clutch pressure plates. Final drive loose with two pulled studs. And the ring-gear carrier was stripped where the splined stub shafts plugs in. Fixing it was just as labor intensive, and just as expensive as any Deere could be. Even the last Cletrac I had apart, that doesn't even have steering clutches, had the planetary differential all falling apart with broken bolts.
