what is this lever for

I got my D4 running today. on the left side below and behind the decompression is a lever what is it for. when it is running and I try to ingage it all I get a grinding sound. again what is its purpose in life?

If memory serves, (big if) you should have bout 5 levers, pinion,high/low,clutch,compression release and engine throttle...seems to me theyre function was cast right into the handle of the clutch/gear/pinion levers...if you got more levers than that its sumpin I aint seen...course theres lots I aint seen....

No I got the pony motor started and started the diesel motor with it. the diesel motor sounded good it has not ran in about 4 years.

CARUMBA !!!!! Don't DO that!!! That lever is to engage the drive pinion of the starting engine to the ring gear! The vertical lever is the starting engine clutch and the horizontal lever is the pinion. What you are doing is grinding off the teeth that you'll need in order to use the starting engine to crank the diesel....YOW!!!!
