I have a new to me JD450 with outside blade and the HLR infront of the seat. When I put it in Reverse and let the clutch out the crawler doesnt move. Is there something else I have to do? I was told that reverse didnt work and alos that it only turns left. The left steering lever has some tension on it when moving but the right side one has play in it all the time. Is there something out of adjustment?

There's a dipstick under the seat cushion for the transmission..Bet you got a bigger problem..An HLR rebuild will seperate the "handy guy" from the mechanic..Under the HLR shifter there is a "drum bung" looking plug.Take it out , then remove the 1/8 pipe plug inside there. Install a 200 lb gauge onto a grease gun flex hose and screw it into the pipe plug hole. Now you can check transmission pressure..Brake locked down , gearshift on left console between 3rd and 4th gear.[there's a neutral in there somewhere].Start engine , ease clutch out making sure you 're in neutral. Put throttle about half throttle.Shift the HLR from gear to gear and record the results..If reverse is out to lunch there will be low or no pressure on the gauge..The pressure should be at least 150 lbs if not slightly higher. Check that linkage is going far enough to actuate reverse..With the engine off listen closely for the detent on the HLR shifter..You should hear or feel the ball detent in the shift valve..good luck..
