I have a 1979 JCB 3D111 backhoe with a Leyland engine. I was wondering if anybody could tell me how the cold start button on the dash works. It has a pull out knob on the end of what looks like a choke cable. I followed the other end of the cable to the bottom of the injection pump. If anyone could tell me how it works, I would appreciate it. Thank you.

In the UK there was a ether type starting aid like you mention called Start Pilot,it was fitted to some JCBs,there was a refill that came for it,you flipped up the top and filled it like you would fill a lighter, when you used it you pushed the plunger once and measured amount got sprayed directly into the intake manifold,I have not seen it for years and don't know what the fluid was but would guess it was ether based, you should not need it unless you live in a very cold area,if you are having trouble starting your JCB do this the next time you are parking it,after you stop the engine, push the stop control back to the run position, put the throttle on full, pull the cold start button, the machine is now ready for starting, when the machine is left that way there is no chance of the metering valve in the pump sticking in the stop position, the same applies to an inline pump to prevent the rack from sticking in the off.

Connected to the bottom of the pump you have a CAV rotary pump, that valve has two functions,it bypasses the metering valve to inject more fuel and retards the pump timing to aid starting,it is not usual to have the control for that valve in the cab, with trucks and the like that valve was fitted outside so the driver could not reach it,with an inline pump it is much the same, when the button is pressed a peg is moved out of the way of the rack and that allows it to travel past the normal high idle position which means more fuel will be injected,in both cases as soon as the engine starts both pumps resets to the normal position

Thank you for the information. The button is on the dash, and the end of the button says COLD START so that must be the one. Also does anybody know what goes in the cold start reservoir for liquid? This is the plunger on the other side of the dash console with a little reservoir on the side of the dash. I live in the northeast, and I am trying to get it ready for the cold weather. Thank you for any help.

I'm not familiar with your tractor at all but it sounds suspicously like a lever that would move the pump internals to supply a little extra fuel for cold starts. My old International Backhoe has something similar except it's on the same cable as the kill.
