I have a 580 ck backhoe with a 188 D engine in it. The engine is a little tired and was wondering if anyone knew what is the approx. rebuild cost of this engine. Is after market parts as good as Case parts. And are they available? Thanks for any input

Bob is closer to the real cost, sure the parts don't sound bad but the machine shop work, hoses radatior, fan belt filter and oil starter ring if needed shot crank and cracked head all the running around and labor, yes i go along with Bob for the cost, don't skimp on anything or it will cost more to redo the job, the cost can get out of hand by trying to save money cutting corners, to rebulid 35 year old engin will cost an arm and leg if done right if not it will cost 2 arms and legs to do it over, i don't want to scare you just make you aware that you could have a bill and large bill at that, more than you thought it would take. I wish you all the best

Thanks for the information guys; I have done gas engines but not diesels. They can't be that much different. I will need to get the pump timing information from Case. I have probably not run five gallons of fuel through this machine per year for the last five years or more. I would like to fix it up so it is not a pile of junk. I just finished rebuilding all the hydraulic cylinders on this machine except three. I figure on doing the engine next. Thanks again

I rebuilt a D-188 about 2 years ago. The kit was about $650 and valves were about $4 each. IF the crank has to be turned, add $100 - $150.

If your rebuild was in a loader backhoe, how much did you have to take apart to get the engine out. This machine has a shuttle shift so I do not know what is involved in the clutch transmission area.

I just finished a rebuild on a 188 Diesel in a track loader. Rebuild kits run about $650. I got mine from www.equipmentpartssource.com Had everything I needed (sleeves, pistons, rings, & bearings) and I thought the quality was good. I recommend that you rebuild the engine before anything major goes wrong. Especially with the crank, as they run about $600. I was in the same boat, had a machine that was tired, used oil, required ether, etc... Ended up ruining the crank by continuing to run it. Between the kit, new crank, cam bearings, cleaning, etc... I have about $1800 in my rebuild. As far as the rebuild goes, (this was my first diesel rebuild) it's pretty straight forward. Sleeves took a little bit to drive out, but the new ones pressed in easily.

Good Luck

Jon

How do you drive out the old sleeves? I am guessing the head holds them in place once you have the engine back together again. Do you know what the bore of this engine is?

as best Iremember the 188D is a sleeved engine. and the last one I worked on cost about $500.00 a hole. new sleeves pistons rod ad main bng gaskets, new oil pump and getting the head reworked. The head was not cracked and only needed valve guides and valves and resurfacing.
