Hi, I have recently purchased an Allis Chalmers HD6E complete with a backhoe and carco winch. The problem I have is that I am not to sure of the year. The identification plate on the consol has HD6E-6896 and srl#98874. Also I am having problems locating the dip stick for the transmission? Finally, if anyone knows of any websites that may provide information on these particular machines it to would be greatly appreciated.

The two sets of numbers have me a little confused. If the serial number was 6896 it would be a 1957 machine. If the serial number is 98874 is would be newer than 1974 - but I think the Allis Chalmers numbers end at #25271. Probably after that - the crawler became a Fial-Allis, or whatever or whoever took over. Look at the cylinder head. If it had pre-combustion chambers on the side - it's the older - pre-1964 Buda 344 c.i. engine. If it has NO pre-combustion chambers - it's the later, direct-injected Buda made after 1963. You might want to get the number off the engine-tag and see what engine-model it is. For example, my HD6 is: Machine ser.# HD6B1358, engine Model 344, ser.# 79815. It is a 1956 machine. Your HD6E differs from my HD6B - because mine has 33 track shoes on each side and NO power-steering. Your's has 37 track shoes on each side WITH power steering.
