I have 1966 450 dozer with the HLR and when I put it in R it won"t move backward. I tried going through the speeds on the left hand side and I noticed them grinding into each gear. The clutch seems like it isnt even there. When I press the clutch in and leave it out, it doesnt seem to grab anything.

Have you adjusted the HLR linkage in the clutch housing? If that adjustment nut backs off it will not move. The gears have no syncros so they will clash if the engine clutch is not fully disengaging. Now if only reverse does not work but the foward gears do its most likelly time to get the checkbook out and do a HLR rebuild. Good Luck.

Had a JD450C that did the same thing. Turned out the the ring gear in the differential is riveted on the head that the axles go into. JD equipment shop fixed it. Had to remove everything from the transmission cover up. Used high strength bolts instead of rivets to fix it in place. Said they have been doing it that way for years. Otherwise, they would have had to remove the tracks and pull the axels to get the head out so they could put the rivets in. Don't know if this your problem or not, but at any rate it was a bigger job than I could handle. Total cost was around $3200, not including pick up and delivery. JD said if they pulled the axles and riveted it, the cost would have been around $6000. Have not had any problems with this repair since it was done 6-7 years ago.
