How to purge air from HD-4 fuel system?

Hi all,

I have been restoring a diesel Allis Chalmers HD-4 and as a result have removed the fuel lines and filter going to the injector pump. I now am reassembling it and wonder how to bleed the air out of the fuel system? I have a shop manual but it seems to skip over this process. My machine is also missing the small hand pump upstream of the filter that the manual shows.

Would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks

Randy

Well, just for anyone's information, starting the HD-4 after replacing the fuel filter and fuel line was no big deal. I filled the fuel tank full so the fuel level was above the filter and then opened the plug on top of the fuel filter until fuel ran clear. Then I cracked the fuel line at the injector pump and let it run until clear. Then I started it with a little more cranking than usual but not a whole lot more. Much more simple than on my other Fiat diesel tractor which is very sensitive to any air in the system.

On my hd4 gravity fed thru to the flex hose just before the filter. The new filter must be full (all the way full before installing on the filter base). I had not had the line from filter to pump off. You may need some air pressure on the tank to get that one. I also used some WD40 spray into the air inlet as a starting aid. Good luck, John
