I spent several hours the last three days backfilling around the house I'm building adjusting the H-L-R per the service manual on the JD 450 as I work.
It seems to work fine for awhile and then starts to slip, so I go clockwise on the adjustment about a half turn and it works fine until the gears start grinding when shifting and then I have to go back where the setting was before. I want to get it adjusted where it will stay before I damage something.
I noticed there is an adustment for oil pressure under the right foot rest panel. The book says to take out or add shims until you reach proper pressure. I think the book said around 140 is correct, with older JD 450's set at 120 and they should be brought up to 140 lbs. I want to check this next. I need to make up a pressure gauge (couldn't find one in the small town by the farm). I borrowed one from a guy at work when I worked on one of my farm tractors last time, but I retired. Where can I get a gauge that reads from 0-165 or do I have to make one up?
Also since I'm so far out of town do I add or take away shims to increase the pressure and are these just metal shims or washers and do I need to get them from the JD dealer before I return to the farm?

A water gauge will work just fine..I use a flex hose from a grease gun attached to the gauge and maybe a short 1/8 pipe nipple screwed to the end. This will allow you clear any obstructions around the test port..

Guess I got a little long winded above.
Will a water tank gauge rated from 0-160 psi work to read oil pressure?
