955K Trans

I just got a 955K that was parked because the trans wouldn't shift into reverse. They tore it apart, then lost the control valve. I bought a used valve, got the machine home, then tore it back apart. The linkage through the case was severly worn. The used valve has two spools: spool 1) FORWARD/REVERSE, spool 2) 1ST, 2ND, 3RD. Each valve has a lock nut type adjustment on the end where it attaches to the linkage. Cat service manual says that it requires adjustment, but doesn't say what the adjust procedure is. Anybody know this transmission well enough to give me any pointers?

Thanks, Tony

First off Tony, replace the shifter shafts bearings and seals through the case and then make sure the BellCrank in the linkage at the back is free. Rebushing it would help too. The above will make shifting much easier. Then with the valve in place shift the trans untill the one end of each spool is near flush with a machined surface on the valve body. Adjust valve end untill it is flush and lock it up. I can't remember which end of which spool but you will see.

Thanks Bob,

The replacement shaft, bushing, and seal are due in from Cat today. There was 1/4" motion in the shaft with zero rotation. I had to force reverse with a crow bar to load it on the trailer to bring it home. I appreciate your help. Tony

Tony, you may aswell replace the bolt, spacer and bushing in the end of the trans shift lever too. That will tighen up the N123 travel. And any worn rod ends in the linkage.
