I finnally spent the money and got myself a 24K tandem dual tilt trailer.
I have moved my JD450 and my old IH 3400A and I must say, It is worth it.
I can just pull straight on until the deck drops, move about a foot more and it is perfectly loaded with the weight evenly distributed.
Thanks for all the input and responses to my questions.
Brian

This is an appropriate post as I was looking at a trailer today. 14ft, custom made (home made). It's make out of 5 inch I-Beams, super heavy, diamond plate deck, pintle, dual axles, electric brakes. However, I do not know the rating on the axles. Any advice on judging the capacity of an axle? Would the axle's dimensions translate into anything worthwhile? They are square, for what that's worth.
Something like with would be perfect for me as a transport my dozer very very infrequently, only in a pinch, and my backhoe is very small, 2500lbs, currently using a single axle, but no brakes.

I know this is vague, thank you,
Joel

I can only make an educated guess, bit with the I beam and dual axles I would say close to 12-14k lbs. What tires/wheels are on the trailer? The bolt pattern will give a good idea of the rating.

That's a good question, the wheel and tires are generic 15 inch automotive tires, standard 5 lug pattern. Not split rim or anything like that. I totally agree with your guess at the trailer's capacity, the ibeams are really big, reinfored at the tongue. I bet the trailer metal weighs at least 2000 - 2500lbs min, not including axles. I am afraid that the axles may be the weak spot though. Particularly when considering the tires, they are mainstream automotive.

Thanks for the response,
Joel
