Just thought I would post this note hoping that it might save someone the aggrevation and wasted time that I have just recently gone through.

I am in the middle of an out of frame overhaul for the 4-202 engine for my JD450. On the recommendations of others I went with JD parts through the local dealer. Even when given the machine type, serial number, engine type, engine serial number, parts that were ordered for me in each case were wrong and had to be returned. Some parts - pistons and liners, were ordered wrong three times. During the order process, not once was I asked for engine particulars.

I got so mad with the JD parts person performance (I have lost a total three weeks and expenses travelling 100 mile round trip each time) that I tried using Reliance parts. I found their prices competitive, the salemans knowledge (or where to look) and what questions to ask far superior to that of the local John Deere dealer. Also, everything I ordered through Reliance to be correct and delivered in a timely manner.

If any one else is about to embark on an engine rebuild, I would strongly recommend checking around first, before ordering parts. For me, Reliance has been good,my John Deere experience miserable and expensive and I am out of pocket some $1300 ( long story, don't ask me why).

Just thought I would pass along this little bit of information so others can see what might happen, regardless of what information you supply.

J.

Hopefully not all the dealers are that bad. I worked for three Deere dealers in my life and they are were pretty good. But - 20-30 years ago - competence was not uncommon. I recently went to a new Deere dealer in my area - and even brought my own part numbers. They argued with me and told me the part numbers were not correct for my machine (1010 crawler). I discovered that everybody there was clueless about older equipment and had no interest in learning anything. I buy parts breakdowns for every machine I own - it saves a lot of time in the end. In regard to your 450 - I don't know what their problem was. There are not too many choices. First block originally had one o-ring per sleeve and NO grooves in the block. Deere had coolant-leakage problems and came up with the three seal-ring sleeve-kit to retrofit into the older block with no grooves. For some reason, this throws some dealers off. I worked on the things when the kit came out. Second generation engine had grooved-block - with two seal rings in the block and one more on the sleeve. There were a few differences in the oil-pumps and rear-main seals also - but it's mostly self-evident.
