A friend of mine want to sell caterpiller d-4. I want to buy that. this crawler hasn't runs a year and half. How do i prime the fuel to get injector? I am going to get it starts if i buy it. Where is the primer? I have work on diesel before but not that caterpiller. Where the place to find the parts? A caterpillar dealer? Thanks

as per Bobs instruction after the filter housing is full (large rectangle cast area in front of injector pump) make sure to mve throtle control for diesel to about 3/4 throtle when injector line are loose or you will just heat up pony motor and waist you time.(been their done that) the diesel engine should also have the decompreser lever in start position.

The D4 has been around a long time
Tell us a little more about the tractor, D4? D?, how about a SN, does it have a gas start Pony Motor? Maybe the year of mfg.

That d-4 has pony motor and it has a cable driven blade that blade go up and down. i don't know where serial number tag is. where the tag locate? The guy said he think it is early 50's. I am going to buy it but the fuel system need to be prime.

Tracey you have a knob about the size of a half dollar on the side of the fuel filter housing. with the starting engine running and the engien turning over, turn the knop Counter clockwise a half tur leave it open until you get a steady flow of fuel. Close knob
if you dont have the bleeder wrench use a 3/4 open end wrench and break open each fuel line at the top of the injector pump. do this for each individual line. tighten as soon as you have fuel. I think I would repalce the filters adn fill the housing to overflowing first. there isa drain plug at the bottom of the filtr housing that lets you drain the sedeent also you hve a small sedement filter in line before the fuel gets tothe pump
