A friend of mine has a JD 350 dozer and all of a sudden the right track is not getting power. He said the steering clutches are hydraulicly activated if that helps dating the machine.

I don't think he stripped the pinon or bull gears because he would have heard that happining. Is there things to check with out a major teardown?

Thanks guys! Will try the spool first then if need be determine what side of the brake drum the problem lies. Also it's a 450C if that make a differance.

I have a 450B that did the same thing once only the left side. The 1&1/2 inch shaft broke. Never heard or felt it. That was fun to get loaded on the trailer with only one side driving up the beavertail ramp!

That would make it a 350C or D.. If that side "coasts" when travelling forward with brake pulled on, then there is a problem outboard of the steering clutch drum-- broken shaft into final drive, stripped splines, bull gear issue??.. if it holds with the brake then its inboard of the clutch drum .. or the engagement pressure is low on that side.. make sure the steering spool is into the valve far enough.. try elongating the linkage (screw the spool into the valve more) to see if that has an effect. Could also be a broken shaft etc.
