I was fiddling with my JD 450 yesterday and still cant it to move left, right, or reverse. I noticed that the HLR shifter moves back just past Neutral for Reverse, is the that it or does it need to slide all the way back into the round area.

With the clutch depressed and in Reverse, it grinds gears when shifting through the 4 speeds near left armrest and also jolts the machine enough to see the tracks shake. I don’t even get the small load noise on the engine in reverse. I can hear a small load noise on the engine when pulling out in Forward. High and Low forward ranges are in good working order. Shifts into speeds fine and when the clutch released, the machine drives forward.

Steering is still not working at all. The transmission fluid is clean and full. The left hand lever has normal resistance when pulling on it. The right hand side has no resistance at all. All linkage for both transmission and steering are connected, I saw nothing unusual. I am assuming that the right foot pedal is a brake pedal. It was stuck down but I worked it a bit and got it to come back to the top position. That did not help.

Anybody else ever have this problem? What should I try next?

Straight 450 or 450 B ?? Pull the top cover off under fuel tank , center section..You can see the ring gear from there..If the transmission is slipping , the ring gear will not turn..If it is not slipping the ring gear will be turning and the steering clutches will be the culprits..

Sounds like you have at the least , two different problems... Does the HLR shifter move into a detent in each position ?? have you put a gauge in the transmission ? Pressure should be the same or real close in high low and reverse.. My first guess would be that the reverse clutch pack is leaking. The gauge should verify that. The steering is another issue..Do the steering clutches release but the brake not hold ? or does it just keep moving forward under power when the steering lever is pulled ? If the clutch doesnt release, then it sounds like you'll have to first go thru the adjustment procedure and when that doesnt work, disassemble the steering clutches , clean and reassemble. My guess is the reverse died and then the machine sat somewhere and now the steering clutches are rusted together... You might have a big project ahead of you...

I think the HLR shifter moves into a detent in each position. No I have not put a gauge on the transmission to check pressure. The dozer keeps moving forward when the steering levers are pulled either direction. Can the problems you mentioned be repaired through inspection covers or does the machine have to be split and do the tracks have to come off?

Is the Tech manual the same thing as the Service manual?
