D3C LGP needs new rails, what is lowest cost way to go, don't want to spent several thousand on new rails. Weld up the wear surface on the rails will this work? How does one do this? explain in detail never have done this, type of rod, grind surface smooth etc. or best to have a shop do this? names of shops in upper midwest?

I work for a Cat dealer and sometimes an inexpensive way out is going directly to your Dealer and ask about "Cat Classic" parts and or used parts. The dealer has a huge resource of parts networking. I hope this helps

I have a used set of D3 tracks They are lubed and have not been turned So if i turn them they will be a pretty good set for a limited use or home owner machine the rail height is pretty good to if i remember. If interested email me and i will do a link count.

They used to build up rails are large machines with a special machine for it. I have a 931B with probably the same tracks as yours. I could use rails too. I am a welder by trade but I don't think it is cost effective to build them up. From what I have read you need to fabricate a copper "mold"[form] for each side of the rail to ensure the whole rail is built up evenly with square edges. You have to work on about four at a time to avoid excess heat build up. The proper rods or wire is Stoody build up or equivalent. I also need bottom rollers but these aren't built up like the bigger ones either. Considering that your pins and bushings are also worn, you might have to bite the bullet. Shop around though, there can be huge price differences for undercarriage. Hope this helps. Dave
