The reverser on my 350 dozer slips in reverse but not all the time. Presure is 120 psi in forward and reverse even when it is slipping. I am assuming that the clutch pack is worn out but will hold pressure. Any sugestions before I pull this out ?

My 350 slipped in fwd only. Figured the clutch pack was shot. Lived with it until the isolator went then tore it down. Turns out the piston carrier had a broken dowel, probably for 20 years. The upside, if there is an upside to having your reverser all over the bench and your dozer in the bush, is that the clutch plates are like new cause they haven't done any work since the dowel broke.

Thanks for the reply. I guess I will have to tear it down and have a look. I have a little more work to do so I am using the reverse in the main trans.

It's been a long time since I've worked on a 350. If memory allows, isn't there a small plate on top of the diff ring gear ??? If so , you can see the ring gear..If it's turning when reverse is slipping , the steering clutches are slipping..If it's not turning , the reverser is slipping..

Thanks for your reply. It only slips in reverse forward is fine. Is it possible that the steering clutches will only slip in reverse?

Hi, as you can see from my posts, I'm dealing with a similar problem, only in reverse, and I can clearly see it's the preasure is low, therefore, probably a leak in my reverser pack, maybe a piston? I would think, if you are holding preasure and slipping, and only in reverse, sounds like the reverser clutch pack is slipping. For me, it was easy to rule out the stearing clutches as the tracks spun in forward when I hit something, until the oil got warm and then leaked down. Probably not the best test, but to confirm it's not the stearing clutches, put the reverser in reverse and the tranny in reverse, thus you'll be going forward, I bet it will spin the tracks, if so, it's probably definately the reverser pack. Could not see, based on diagrams, how you could have preasure in system and not in pack?? I guess there may be some scenerio?? You've gotten a response from one of the most experienced guys.
