My 420C is making a knocking noise in first and reverse gears. It's not a ticking like it did when I broke a tooth off years ago, louder than that. It doesn't do it in second or fourth. I don't use third because it got stuck there once. Anybody got any ideas? TIA

The chances of splitting the case wide open are very high. I have a 420 case that someone did just that to. It is cracked from one end to the other and even the shifter cover broke. Teeth floating around in the gear oil have a habit of ending caught between a couple of gears and all hell breaks loose. Unless you want to turn this into a parts machine, find out what is wrong and fix it.

Thanks. I thought of that after I posted. I'm gonna get one of those telescoping magnets and see if I can fish any pieces out of the bottom, before I even load it on the trailer.

Unless you have a gear to use that does not click, I would guess it will just damage it further. That being said, if all it damages is the gear that is already bad, no great loss there.

Pull the top cover, I would bet you have a tooth missing.

Thanks, that's what I was afraid of. Is it apt to do further damage if I finish up my Fall work with it? I'm trying to get a couple acres rock-free ready to plant rye.
