I have a 1977 JD 450C. I've had it for a little more than 2 years and have used it only 200 hours. The brakes are about gone but I'm sure they were good when I bought it. The right track doesn't seem to brake at all but the left one has some braking left. I have the manual but I'm wondering is it hard for someone with no experience to adjust them? Reading the manual it sounds a little involved. Thanks for any suggestions or comments.

You can tighten the brakes through the large pipe plug in the side of the steering clutch housing.. Its similar to the adjusters on a car/truck brake drum. Tighten it a few clicks at a time and see if it changes.. Traditionally , wet steering clutches/brakes dont need routine adjustment but it does happen.. Just be aware that you may be covering up an underlying problem such as brake material breaking away from the band resulting in metal to metal wear which isnt good. As the other guy stated, the manual can be confusing and explains the adjustment in a perfect world on a machine that hasnt had 30 years of wear to the linkage... A better approach is to understand the system, and realize what youre trying to acccomplish is merely the correct timing between clutch disengagement and brake application... the clutch needs to disengage before or at the same time as the brakes apply. You can toss the manual away once you understand what the linkage does and adjust the steering to be able to get nice powered turns instead of jerky operation...same basic theory applies wheter its the dry clutches on a 450B or the wet clutches like you have on the 450C...

I'm sure Roy will chime in here tonight but I just did a 450B and it was easier to do than to read about. Once I figured out what they were talking about and ID'ed all the parts, it really was easy.
I know the 450C is different but I bet it's not hard.
