Ok, we pulled the engine and the reverser out of the machine. Not exactly what I expected. We were getting an oil leak from the reverser into the transmission. I was hoping just an oil seal between the two parts, but the seals on both ends of the shaft look good, definitely not bad enough to cause the kind of leak we are getting. The reverser fluid goes down and the trans starts overflowing out of the dipstick very quickly when running. Since the reverser is out, where should we start looking for the problem. I might add that we are working on the machine at a high school tech school. This is the first crawler we have gotten involved with. Thanks for any help.

ummmm... you can put the reverser back in... generally when they transfer oil like that its leaking from the steering clutches or the piston rings they ride in... The engagement oil pressure for the steering clutches comes from the reverser pump.

Ok, so what is our next step. Is there a seal or something in the pump?

remove the steering clutches-- they come out with the final drives... reseal the clutch pistons and replace the piston rings and check the collar they ride in... a manual might help
