I'm trying to decide which of these 2 dozer to buy. The D6 (early 60's)is a very worn, but usable with direct start. It needs sprockets badly and the under carrage has about 30% left. Price is aroung $8,500.

The other is a HD-11 (early 80's) Fiat Allis. It's a little less worn, but still has alot of wear. Cost around $14,000.

Considering the reputations of each of these dozers and the availability/cost of used parts, which to buy?

Depends what you want to do with it. I have had a D6 in that series and it was a good tractor but a little underpowered for me. I sold mine for $12000.00 and it had about 85% undercarriage. Nice thing is you can get parts fairly easy for them.

I'm going to use it around the farm to clean ponds, fence rows, level pads for buildings, fill in a trench silo, take out a few trees, level ground. I just want something that is dependable considering I buy it in decent shape.

Are there after market under carrage parts available? CAT sure is high. Its around 16k for a complete undercarrage assembly set.

The D6 44a which is also known as a D6B should be fine for what you want to use it for. If you are planning on removeing trees with it though you really should have sweeeps and for sure need a EROPS. Easy to get killed without one. It will do everything you need although it might take a while. I would stay away from the FIAT/Allis as I don"t think they hold up as well and are a little harder for parts

What are sweeps? Is that a straight blade that doesn't angle?

Anything to look out for on this direct drive D6B?

Sweeps are the bars that come down from the top of the canopy or erops toward top of radiater. If a tree falls it catches it there. If you don't know much about undercarriage it might be worth your while to pay a local mehanic $100 bucks or so to stop by and check it out for you. Would be money well spent on any dozer you buy. If you could get a chance to work it you might check to see if it runs hot. Pretty hard this time of year though. Good machine, light and easy to move. Direct drive is cheap to fix. I guess if it doesn't look all beat up it will probably work. If it has 30 to 40 percent undercarriage you probly can get 500 to 1000 hours on it before it's totally shot. Probably ten years the way it sounds!

I found out the CAT is a straight D6 44A. Whats the difference between a D-6 and a D-6B or C? Is it just the year they were built?

I think the D6 is a 1962 and is not a power shift. It has an angle blade and is hydraulic.
