I have a 1988 John Deere 555A crawler loader. The finals (both) started leaking oil. I removed track and final from the right side, replaced all seals and bearings with new and re-installed. Now the right track will not turn at all. Prior to my doing this work it pushed fine. What could I have done or not done. I know I must take it all apart again but I want to know what to look for. Beings it was pushing good (but leaking) before, it must have been something I did while removing or re-installing. I would appreciate any information anyone could share. I have identified Roy as it seems he knows something about this machene.

Thanks
Myassitis from Missouri.

Thanks Roy
I had help from my son on this and he doesn't remember if he tighten the one set screw or not. However you sounded like there were multible set screws and I don't remember but just the one. You are proberly correct in your assumtion. How much problems to replace lines other than the grunt work needed to take tank off? Thank you so much on this.

There is only one set screw for each drum..Lines are not a big deal..I use old phone cable , cut apart for marking which line goes where..You'd be surprised how many color combo's there is in there.

You ain't gonna want to hear this BUT,,,,,I'll just about bet the set screws that center the steering clutch drums onto the upper final drive shafts weren't installed into the groove in the shaft..Chances are the drums walked inward and cut the pressure hoses on the back side of the clutch drum...You gotta have pressure there to actuate steering clutches...Pull the tank assembly in one piece..Pull the steering clutch top covers and follow the hydraulic fittings to the clutch manifold....Bet the capscrews cut into the hoses..No pressure/No go..Sorry..Thats my guess anyway...

Roy
I think I understand. My intent is pull crawler in shop this week end and do repairs over the winter. From what you described I believe we did in fact cause the problem. Right now it's Duck Seson in Missouri and that's my priority. When I do get started I will more than likely be contacting you for more support. When I get back in operation I intend to sell or trade for a dozer. I do work on my farm and the crawler is good to work with however, I can only afford to buy used and I have been told that the strain put on loaders is far greater than that of a straight dozer with blade. Thus the hours on a crawler loader means more wear than the same hours on a dozer. Does this make sense to you? Thanks
Myassitis

Sure.....Especially if it's equipped with grouser bars [ dozer pads ]..spinning tracks while lifting puts a tremendous strain on power train...Hours are hours whether dozer or loader..I've seen dozers " put away wet " over taxing the capabilities of the machine..
