Hello everyone. I'm going to look at a John Deere 450C dozer. It is supposed to be 70%U/C and have the wet clutches. What should I pay special attention to. I have decent mechanical ability, but little experience with dozers other than what I have read. Thanks a lot everyone.

Well guys I looked at the 450C. The fresh coat of paint was the only decent part! I really don"t think the undercarriage was 70%. I don"t know much about dozers, but the sprockets were pointed and the grousers were only about a half inch tall. There was noticable wearing on the pins and bushings. The rails were thin, and the worst part was after pushing for 15 minutes I still barely got the oil pressure out of the red. Serial number checked out to be a 1978, and the guy wanted $13,750. I just didn"t feel it was worth it so I walked away. Thanks for your help.

Might not have even been a C. I don't know when they came out but I've seen a lot of new paint with newer numbers to try to fool people. It sounds like it was pretty tired and worn out. Dave

Watch out for broken engine frame rails[ goes from nose to steering clutch housing ]..Look for loose or broken clutch housing bolts where they go through engine frame rails...Front crossbar to frame cracks..Welds at rear of engine frame rail..[ welds don't hold , brittle metal used there }..Bolts broken at rear crossbar , caps loose..Take a bar with you and check final drives for looseness by prying between sprocket and track frame..Good Luck..R.S.

Besides all the normal stuff you'd check on any machine - two things to watch out for in a 450C. Run it, push some dirt - or drive up some steep banks - until you get the entire machine good and hot. Then, #1 see if the engine still holds good oil pressure at low speeds, and #2 make sure the HL-R trans and the steering clutches still work well - especially at low RPM. Many such problems only show up hot - and an engine job, HL-R job, and steering-clutch job could easily cost over $12,000 in a repair shop. And - if the undercarraige is real bad - another $5000 or more.
