Not that I want to start a war here. I like neat old machinery that works. I need a dozer for light farm work. That means maintaining my road, moving some dirt around occasionally. Maybe pulling the odd tree out of the woods.

I think a dozer in the 8000lb range would be fine for what I need to do. I may plumb my 7ft backhoe onto the back - I hate having it on the tractor because I am always taking it off to use implements. I am willing to work on it but not up front. I need a good undercarriage to start with. If it breaks down later so be it. Right now I have too many cars, a truck, and several farmalls that need restoration.

It has to be a diesel too, so that 20 years from now when the Dino juice is too expensive I can still play with my toys..

Flame on...
Charley

I have a 49 D-2 have restored a 43 D-2 great for pulling and most parts availible (they are very short tracked 4 rollers aprox. 30"on the ground)
makes it hard to grade with. I am restoring an 1965 IH 500 now but the parts are more dificult to come by.

IH's version of this was a TD6 same engine as in the WD6's and possibly now still the cheapest in purchase price, although due to the popularity of owning as small dozer they often sell for more than the larger ones.

You didn't mention your price-range. But - it's getting hard to find parts for a lot of these older crawlers - and for some, harder than others. Many undercarriage parts are getting discontinued - OEM and aftermarket. If you stick with a popular machine, then most parts - incuding undercarriage will be redily available. In an 8000 lbs range - I don't know what kind of Cletrac you've got in mind - since parts are scarce for the bigger ones. An OC6 diesel weighs around 5800 lbs. and engine parts are not as easy to find as the smaller OC3s and HGs. An OC4 diesel dozer weighs 5000 lbs. You mention 1010 and 2020 Deere - but engine and some hydraulic trans. parts can be a problem. A 350 or 450 would make things much easier. Any part can be had for them. Allis Chalmers HD4 dozer is around 8800 lbs. and most parts still available - but perhaps not for long. Cat D2 - I have no experience. If you can stand a hand-clutch, I think the best buys are often Allis Chalmers HD5s or HD6s. Parts are pretty easy to find and they often sell cheap. HD5 has a Detroit Diesel engine, HD6 has a Buda 344 four-stroke diesel. There are of course many others.

guess I could have added the JD 1010, 2010 and there must be a similar IH dozer but I am not at all familiar with them...
