Hi everyone,

I am trying to adjust the steering clutches on my 450 and am not having any luck. I should state here that the machine has power steering assist (pump on front of the engine).

I have gone through the procedure as set out is the book - adjusting the clutch movement on the long 3/8"bolt, to give the 1 1/2" - 2" play on the long hand levers, as required for the power steering. Then block bottom of lever at this position to adjust yoke and pin. Also adjusting the brake screw as instructed.

At the completion of the adjustment, when I start the machine to check out the steering levers, I find the brake is already on - by the position of the foot pedal on the floor.

What am I doing wrong - it seems as soon as the engine is running and supplying hydraulic pressure, the brake is applied. Have I adjusted the rod and yokes wrong or is there something else going on that I am not aware of?

Prior to me buying this machine last year, the previous owner had problems with the right steering clutch, but called in a mechanic who was able to readjust it. When I bought the machine both steering clutches worked - the left one better than the right.

I have been unsuccessfully messing with this on and off for a while and have been reading previous posts with interest. I am in a bit of a bind here and am hoping that it is just the adjustment - something I am doing wrong, and not something that needs to be opened up and replaced.

Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

J.

First of all , We need to study how the system works...The free-play adjustment is the long 3/8" bolt...You stated that you have 1-1/2 to 2" of free-play..Good , that's a start..Next, back off the short bolt[ 5/16 " } a couple of turns..You can watch the throw-out bearing come into contact with the clutch fingers when you pull on the levers..This again is the free-play adjustment.. The clutch disconnects then the brake band starts to apply in theory.....Back off the brake band [ 13/16" headed bolt ] about a turn..now tighten it back up till it stops..Snug not tight..Back it off 1 turn and let it drop into it's place so it's locked there..There's a cam action going on there.Pull on the lever and watch for movement of the brake band..Now adjust the 5/16" bolt to "time" the brake band so it applies the band after the clutch disconnects..... 1- Free-play 2- Brake band 3- timing bolt..If everything is working as it should , it will steer....If not , you might have to do a repair on it..
