Hi there, unfortunately, or fortunately, I am more familiar with a reverser than I had hoped to be, but then knowledge is never a bad thing. Roy and demaris have posted probably a thousand responses explaining in detail how these things work. Here is my laymans explanation. Instead of a typically clutch like a car. A reverser is a hydraulic clutch, that has two packs, a forward pack (for going forward) and a reverse pack for going in reverse. You flip the lever forward, the hydraulic oil is sent, via valve to the pack that, via some gears and shafts, spins the tranny forward, the clutch is engaged via the oil preasure and a piston that squashes (sorry for the technical term) the clutch disks together. Flip the lever back and the oil is directed to the reverse pack, which spins the tranny backwards. And there you have it, there are probably a bunch of stuff I left out, but that's the jist of it.

Just what the name implies. It allows you to change direction without clutching or changing gears. Dave
