How do these two machines compare? They have similar condition undercarriages, and are in about the same condition. I need to push up virgin dirt to build a spot for a house. My first concern is which one is more maintenance/repair friendly. Which one holds up better, and is easier to operate. How about performance? Thanks.

they are actually for different markets, the Cats are more commerical and the JDs are ok for residential. both are good machines, I am an old cat mechanic and am more famlair with them.

Well we had both machines only one model older. We had a JD 450b and I always thought that the old tinkernational 500 dad had was the poorest machine ever built till we owned he 450b. I pity the poor fool that bought that pile of scrap metal. Dad owned it for 5 years and it cost more in repairs than he paid for it. We then owned a Cat D3 for about 10 years and the only repairs were 1 starter and a bunch of hydraulic hoses. We put new tracks on it but they were wore out when we got it. We sold it and the guy that bought it had a piston break 1/2 hour after he started using it. We told him up front that the engine was in serious need of a rebuild. But he was just going to use it for what he needed and would get by with it. Well dad gave him his money back and we put a new engine in it and now it has more power than I remember. But even with the new engine it still lacks a lot of costing as much as the JD did in repairs. We now have a Cat D5c and that is just as if not more reliable. We also have a JD555g. Nice machine easy to operate and fairly nimble compared to our older MF bucket loaders but still has had more than twice the repairs and has 1/2 the hours of the Cat. Take from this what you will but I am sold that Cat is a better machine.

The JD will have wet brakes which are better. Cats usually have more resale value. Cat explains things in very good detail in their manuals. Cat track frames are built stronger. The JD may have a turbo which is something else to go wrong. Some people aren't big fans of Cat 3204's. It is hard to say which is a better machine. They are in direct competition with each other. Go to the dealers and see who is easier to talk to. Up here the Cat dealer doesn't even have a service counter. The cat will have a full powershift transmission with either 1 reverse or 3. In forward it can be shifted between all gears without stopping. I have a 931B Cat which is the loader version. I used to have a JD 355D loader. It is a size smaller. I know someone with a 450D and an older 951C Cat. He says Cat makes a better machine. I don't know. There is a lot more questions about problems on JD's on this forum. I think it would depend on price and history of the machine. The Cat I believe will steer with foot pedals, leaving your hands free for the trans. and blade levers. You might sit a little higher on the Cat. It's still a toss up. Hope this helps. Dave
