#1 cyl is next to the flywheel same side as the mag,
# 3 is beside it, #2 is next to the flywheel
opposite side to the mag. #4is beside it.
TDC mark on vane of flywheel straight out from key
way on crankshaft should be straight up for DC [in line with governor shaft] Leave flywheel in this
position and install mag. so that the marked tooth
on the mag drive gear is visible in thelower half
of the inspection hole [ plug on side of gear case]
distributer terminals are numbered. Adjust position of mag so that impulse trips slightly after TDC mark #1 cylinder Breaker point setting when
fully open is Fairbanks Morse .012" Wico .015" "Watch the short crank .broke my wrist 3 places"

Keyway on top and align timing marks on mag and mag drive gear, I think. No problem with being 180 out as the mag fires at crank speed, not camshaft speed, so fires on exhaust as well. Set impulse to trip a smidge after tdc as when they kick back that little start handle can go flying! Go from there. If I find my book, I will check details.

Troy, If the mag is installed on the engine just pull the plugs and lay em on top of the engine with the wires hooked up (mark or # the wires so ya dont get em crossed) and roll the engine over with the starteryou should see spark either at the electrodes or where the plugs ground, if on the other hand the mag is on the bench you need to ground it (ground rod and jumper cable works ok for this) and turn the drive I always put em in a vise after one bit me years ago causing me to drop it on the floor breaking a brand new cap, the only wisconsin I had a vg4d had an impulse drive and you could turn it by hand and it would fire. A word of caution here, any minute now someone will come here and tell ya to just hold the mag in one hand and turn it with the other (was tempted myself WEG) bad Idea! (thats how I broke the new cap on mine my "buddies" thought it was funny till the pieces of cap were seen all over the floor)...good luck
