Hello
I'm looking at a jd450b crawler loader to buy. I do not know much at all about these machines. The conditions of the undercarriages concern me. I have read about the six wear parts and how to measure them. Does anyone have the factory specs. for sizing them? Any other info about these machines would also be helpful. Im looking at a 1971 JD450B with a 4in1 bucket and backhoe with 4000 hours on it. They want $12000 for it.

Thanks
Mike

Thanks for the info. Does anyone have wear charts for the idlers, sprockets, upperand lower roller, links, pins and bushing and grousers. On the machine im looking at the pins have been turned. Is this a real bad thing? The wear charts would help me out beacuse i do not have the experience to "eye it up".

Is there any way to check the tranny on this machine?

Does anyone have any experience with a 4in1 bucket, seems very useful to me but i have never owned one.
Thanks
Mike

When I posted earlier, I didn't notice that the machine has a hoe - that certainly adds value. Maybe I should wear my glasses. Still ought to be a $8000 - $9000 machine though, unless it's in real nice shape. And, make sure you look at the backhoe itself. If it has separate swing cylinders, that's a good setup. If it has one - barrel shaped swing cyliner it is an awful setup and very hard to get parts for, and even harder to repair. Years ago, when I worked for Deere, Deere was selling conversion kits to get rid of the barrel cylinder. For some wear-info, try: Link

Can you speak a little more about the conversion kits? I have a JD Model 50 backhoe with the rotary swing cylinder. It works well right now, but was wondering if the conversion kits were still available somewhere.

Deere isn't acutally "service orientated" anymore - at least not with the older stuff. I'm sure the kit was discontinued years ago, and even if it wasn't, the cost would be very high. I last worked at a Deere dealership around 1991 - and I had installed a few of those kits around that time period - probably late 80s. Came new right from Deere parts depot in Syracuse, New York. One time we had a customer who was kind of stuck, and we'd alreay attempted to repair his barrel cylinder several times. Ended up, my boss sent me up to Syracuse to pick up the kit - rather than wait a week for it to come truck-freight. Deere had many "kits" for updating tractors that you would not find in a conventional parts book. Not sure where is WAS listed - since I was a grease-monkey and never worked in the parts department. But somewhere, Deere had a list for "components" rather than individual parts.

Thanks for the reply- as of right now my barrel swing cylinder works pretty well. I was mainly wondering for "down the road" if its performance deteriorated.

It's getting up there in age. Is the hoe in good shape? The hoe is worth a few bucks. A new much lighter one for a bobcat is over $10,000. Get the owner to take it off and put it back on. Make sure the hoses are reconnected when it's off. The backhoe attacment is really nice to have but is very heavy on the back of the machine. If just using the loader it works way better and faster with the hoe off. I have a Cat with a hoe that had never been off. It's supposed to take 5 minutes but took over an hour because the 2 pins that have to come out were packed up with dirt and stuff. I cleaned everything up and it comes off a lot faster. Check the condition of the hoe bucket and how sloppy the pins are. It's a good indication of how often it was greased. The hoe should easily pick the back of the machine up with the boom. If everything is in good condition and works properly the price might not be too bad. You could get a newer machine that could be in worse shape. Look for oil leaks as well. Hope this helps. Dave

My opinion for what's worth - $12,000 is too much money - regardless of how good it looks. In my area - central New York, crawler-loaders rarely bring as much as dozers. I've passed up many a good running 450 series loader in the $4000-$6000 price range. I looked at one last month - useable undercarriage - probably half its life left, recent motor job along with new turbo, and recent steering clutches, plus a winch. I passed on it, the guy later sold it for $5500. Of course, there's no shortage of people asking much more. A dealer near me has an old, first-year 450 dozer with outside blade and a $16,500 price tag on it. It ought to be worth around $7000 - in my experience.
