Thanks for the info on the JD 450B crawler loader backhoe. Does anyone have wear charts for the idlers, sprockets, upperand lower roller, links, pins and bushing and grousers. On the machine im looking at the pins have been turned. Is this a real bad thing? The wear charts would help me out beacuse i do not have the experience to "eye it up".

Is there any way to check the tranny on this machine?

Does anyone have any experience with a 4in1 bucket, seems very useful to me but i have never owned one.
Thanks
Mike

I have a 4 in 1 bucket on my Cat. It's good for picking up trees and stuff and if the clam is opened only a little you can scrape off topsoil without digging too deep. If the clam is opened all the way you can use it like a dozer blade but it takes practice and on hills it doesn't lower enough. The blade goes a lot lower on a regular dozer. The biggest problem I've found with the bucket is when doing any light brush work. All the hydraulic lines and hoses are just waiting to get snagged on branches that fall behind the bucket. If you're working with stickier material opening the clam usually helps to dump the bucket. It works really well for pulling out fence posts and smaller stumps. On bigger stumps it's good to dig around them with the hoe first. It's a nice bucket to have. Dave

I forgot to mention about undercarriage wear - and I don't know if you went to the undercarriage wear website I posted, or not. With a 450, if you take a measurement between the centers of pins for four links - new is supposed to measure around just a hair over 25". If it measures over 25 7/8", they are considered worn-out. Now, if the chain pitch seems okay and is close to 25", then take a look how the chain sits in the sprocket. If - when under tension - the bushings stay at the bottom of each tooth-cutout - then the sprockets are probably okay. But - if the bushings are riding high - that usually indicates either the sprockets are worn out - or the track chain is worn - but you've checked the latter already. Also, get the crawler tracks off the ground - the front blade will do half the job. Then check the bottom rollers for any play.

There is nothing wrong with turning the pins and bushings. Just keep in mind that when the tracks get loose again, they will probably be way beyond wear limits. The hardness on the track chain is barely a 1/4" deep. In regard to checking the hydraulic trans (HL-R), not 4sp gear trans. - you need to run it when it is GOOD and hot. I've seen many that work fine for the first half hour of hard work, and then crap out. I would not buy a 450 without either the chance to push some dirt and try it out, or get some sort of guarantee that the trans. works when hot. It can cost many thousands to fix. Same hot check needs to be done with the engine. Unlike most other Deere engines, the Deere four-cylinder engines usually have balancing shafts or gears. The 450 has two shafts. They are often ignored during in-frame engine rebuilds. The result is sometimes an engine that works fine until it gets hot - and then - no oil pressure at low RPMs.
