Oil pressure for the D318 is about 30 psi at normal speed and operating temperature. This would be using straight 30wt oil in moderate climate.

Temperature regulators for the D6 are set to open at 160 deg F. Operating temp will vary with load. Anything below boiling is fair game.

no tools, I think Your in a differnt leage than me.
I't seemed like that It was a little hot 190

My oil pessure droped today, it normaly runs at 19 hot, after running for a hr or two. Today it droped to 12 I stopped and pointed into the wind let it idle, coolant cooled of quikly. But oil psi didn't come up, oil level good I just changed the oil 15 or so hrs ago. Motor had been worked on before I got it. The man I got it from, told me that he did an in frame and rebuilt the oil pump, motor runs strong first time I ran it for any lenght of time she got hot 200 or so leaking cooant I pulled the rad. had it cord out.
Any advice I have no spaner wrench i'll look tomorrow Thanks Mike

I am at work tonight. I have to say i am sorry that i missed the fan belt tighting you ask about.
When you said 318 i had a brain lock we have always Knowin the D6 as 3306 or 3406 engines.
ON that engine there Make sure that the bottom pully is not wore so bad that the belt is running in bottom of (THE V).If so it will not pull that fan like it should WE have had that on the big tractor dozers. All though them tractors do run warm on hard work. IF the belly pan is full of debree that makes EVER thing hard to keep cool.
Makes it hard to cool Engine oil transmission hyd and ever thing when one gets hot they all get hot.
hope this give some clues.
Have a good one BILL

If you remove the two 5/16 clamp bolts the bolt holes are relieved to accept the pins of a spanner wrench. Do not use a punch to turn the adjustable pulley as it will bugger up the thread clamping feature that Bob (Hi Bob) mentions.

The D318 engine was standard engine used on the "U" series D6 and #12 Grader and others. It was one of Cats finest engines.

U9-U9-Cat
ON the d6 190 degrees i would not be concerned.

I operate D8s---D9s---D10s for a living we push coal with large blades we run them 240-250 in the summer for days on top of days (24 hours) none stop.
Now if they get 260 and boiling out coolant we take some of load off but keep working till back to 240.

WE push them around 210 220 in 30 degree weather.
Yes we'll lose a engine ever 8-10 thousand hours
I have never hurd of the 318.

That's up at the top end. The fan pulley is threaded and can be tightened together to adjust belt tension. There should be a bolt to loosen and allow the threads to move. There is a cut in the hub and the bolt pinches the threads to lock it. Clean off pully hub and look for it, don't know if it goes in from front or back. Make sure pully half is free don't force things and ruin the threads.
Later Bob
