Deere 450C Crawler Loader

Does anybody know what might be causing my Deere 450C (crawler) to jump out of first gear? It only happens on grades of 20%+ and in either forward or reverse.

It's also very hard to shift between 1st and 2nd without grinding gears It doesn't jump out of 2nd, 3rd or 4th gears, however.

I suspect the worst but thought someone might know of the problem and a fix other than a trans rebuild. I'm hoping for some linkage adjustment or something similar.

Thanks very much,

Clarence

It's supposed to grind - the gears have no synchros whatsoever. Brand new 450s would grind - but if the clutch disk has a little oil on it, or is out of adjustment, it will grind worse. Shifting ought to be done at a dead stop after the cluth is held in for awhile. It is a "range" four-speed trans, not an "on the go" trans. That's why the HL-R hydraulic trans is coupled to it. The range gears get damaged over the years - usually from impatient shifing. When enough wear exists on the gear tooth from clashing, the angle of it changes - and it pushes itself out of gear under a load. Sometimes it can be made to work again by grinding the gear teeth.

Thanks you guys,

I sure do appreciate all of your advice and suggestions. I'll take a run at the adjustments and see where that takes me.

Thanks again,

Clarence

Exactly .....Make sure it goes into gear all the way..Either adjust it so 1st is definitley in gear or file the shift quadrant longer so the lever can go farther into 1st gear..There might be some residual damage from the jumping out of gear..There might be linkage problems with the clutch or adjustments to be made to alleveate the grinding problem..

Thanks much Roy,

We just purchased this rig and there isn't much we won't tackle to repair. Nevertheless, I'm not so familar with this Deere 450C loader but we do have the parts manual so I'll look to see if I can determine how to adjust the linkage. Otherwise, do you happen to know how to do it and it is somewhat easy to do?

It sounds like you think there's two issues, one relating to the popping out of gear and the other relating to the grinding between gears.

Regardless, your answer was reassuring that I don't have to do a tranny rebuild, (at least at this point) and I sure do appreciate your comments.

Clarence
