The first thing I had to do was go though the radator. It was bad shape, it a oil cooler that was even worse, I was told I didn't need it because oil's much better these days and the cooler was 1500 bucks so I went with the advice well I found a oil cooler thats 13x11.5x1.5 with 8AN fittings its the biggest one I could find.

I have a push fan , I plain on mounting the cooler under the hood with a air gap, close to the front, radator , as possable
I haven't gotten the cooler yet so advice is still helpfull I guess, the better I get with her the more of a load, I'm putting on her. she sure sounds sweet. she's still runing at 190 temp.
Thanks Mike

The D318 used an oil cooler (factory installed) until the end of production and should be retained. Best to find an original replacement or good used unit.

Did it have a factory one ? Many times these have been bypased due to leaks and repairs on top of repairs over the years. There is also a safety feature, that when or if the cooler ever became clogged, the oil bypassed it at the filter base, when bypassing these, I know there is something to be careful about, and it seems the the thread size of the tubing used was a bit odd.

If it is getting run hard, in hot weather, probably can't hurt to have a cooler, but they are hard to find, and many believe that they were not necessary, and they were phased out, the latter of which is true. Modine used to make them for Caterpillar, every so often you will see an original still in the crate turn up.

I'm not sure what else may work as a substitute, and what others have used besides what came from the factory.
