Diesel Smoking Question

Looking at an 60's Allis diesel dozer. It had not been run for a year or more. It started with some effort, but grey smoke is incredibly thick. Not sure whether it was smoking when parked, but supposedly not. Question is whether this dozer will need major work or whether it might clean up from setting when it has run for a while. And how much trouble to fix?? - change rings???

Sounds like a fuel delivery issue to me.

Change the filters, drain or use all the fuel (if you use it, add a bunch of fuel cleaner/conditioner), check the tank and filter for signs of alge (black crud), fill with fresh fuel and cleaner / conditioner and run it hard for that full tank. If it is getting better, keep repeating with the cleaner until it's as good as it's gonna get.

You may also want to pull the injectors and check pattern, pop off pressure and leak down rate. You may have some leaking. It may be cheaper to buy rebuilt injectors than to have a shop test the old ones, so check around first for prices. If you do pull them, check the wet and dry cranking compression and do a leak down on each cylinder. That will tell you a lot about the condition of the engine.

Since it has been sitting for some time,try running a heavy concentration of fuel conditioner/ injector cleaner...it may help and it is cheap to start with. I bought a tractor that had been sitting a LONG time and this cleared up about 90% of it. The AGCO dealer out this way swears by FIC, put out by PB Blaster and it seems to help. I run it in all the diesels here.

My 21 is white gray on start up and cold. After a warm up it cleans some. When up to working temp it is clean and a trace of black when it is pushing a medium load. Is this dozer turboed. Bob

Our hd 11 smokes very little.Several options on where the smoke is coming from,stuck rings hole in pistonvalve guides ect.What motor is in it and what size tractor is it.The best test is start it cold let it warm up and then work it like a dawg an see if the smoke stays grey white or black.If it misses when started cold then I would say more exploration is needed Steve

Not an expert. But in my opinion, it could clear up, but I have never been lucky enough to have it happen. I've bought two tractors like that, one cleared up maybe a little, the other never improved. I'd plan on engine work.

Been around a few of these allis engines and they have a habit of throwing out grey smoke,You do alot of repairs and still may have the same result on that allis engine,just things i've seen over may years.some body may have a better answer.
