The D8K's had a D342 engine rated at 300 HP. When they first came out a lot of operators who had run the later high HP 46A's complained that the D8K's did not have as much HP as the older machines. This was a misconception due to the D8K's having a muffler and a different torque in them. I personally had customers who complained about this but after installing the Horse Power Meter on the engine and proving to the operator what HP the engine was putting out they had to admit that the D8K was more productive. Bob is correct about the block problem which was due to the fact that Cat had a block that was designed for 275 HP but once you started pulling 300 HP from it you soon discoverd the weak point. As he also mentions you have to make sure you keep the radiator clean to advoid overheating the engine. You have to read the temperature gauge along with the cooling system pressure gauge to determine what temperature the engine is operating at. As for your question about the price been asked for this unit you do not state what blade is on it or what is on the back end. I have seen a lot of D8K's go across the block at Ritchie Bros Auctions for a lot less that $58,000. But if it has new undercarriage on it and it is a clean unit then maybe it might be worth it. I am sure that at todays prices it would cost that much alone just to do a complete undercarraige job. If you are serious I would pull some filters and cut them open to check for contamination and also make sure you check the final drives out.

The engine is a D342, 5,3/4 Bore six cyl, Powershift trans. Watch out for the rad pressurizing with combustion gases. They are good old tractors.

HP is in the high 200's maybe 285 depending on altitude. Some times the block cracks between the cylinders. The crack starts inside and work out towards the liner seat. This allows the linar to drop enough for the head gasket to blow. Block can be machined for inserts to repair this. Keeping the rad in good condition reduces the chance of this.
