JD 450 TRANSMISSION runs hot

Lots of posts in the archives and from me on the HLR problems in the JD 450 and this question is related to my previous post about radiator running hot.
I seem to have plenty of oil pressure in the HLR (160 to 170) when first starting up and for about the first hour. I then lose to about 90 when the transmission heats up and it starts acting up in the high and reverse. Low forward seems to always work properly and have more oil pressure.
I can do all the adjustments on the HLR in the book until the cows come home and nothing seems to help.
I use the JD 303 rated transmission oil from the local farm supply store as recommended but I'm beginning to wonder if it comes in different weights like 10W and 30W. Transmission running cooler and maybe a lttle thicker oil might help?
I need to fix the transmission temperature gauge next to monitor the temp and see just how hot it gets. If the transmission works fine until it gets hot it looks to me like the problem is heat, not adjustments. If it runs hot can this thin the oil and cause this problem?

I agree with MN Scott. I've tried to warn prospective buyers about 450s. They are great machines, and so are the HL-R trans. But . . . with the cost of parts, they are often too expensive to fix. I've been coming across 450s in pretty nice shape getting cut up and parted out because they need trans. jobs. Usually, when they first start to fail, it takes an hour or so of pushing dirt to notice it. That's when many get a "for sale" sign hung on them. I had a chance to buy a pretty nice 450 dozer with 6-way blade a few months ago for $3500 and I passed on it. All it needed was the HL-R trans fixed - but I might of had another $4000-$5000 in it when I got done - you never know for sure - until you pull them apart. And, if you pull it apart - and find just one or two things failed, but the rest 3/4 wore out - what are you going to do? Patch it up, or fix it right. The latter can cost a fortune. In answer to your Hyguard , or 303 oil questions. Yes - Deere sells it in different viscosities - they sell a regular duty 303 oil, and a "cold weather" Hyguard. But, neither has anything to do with your problem.

bad jd 450 transmission in reply to jdemaris, 12-01-2006 11:18:07
Late 1969, 6way blade, JD 450 with transmission that goes bad in reverse when hot. Is there a parts supplier with low cost parts. Do I need to take the transmission out of the dozer? Is this an expensive repair?
Thanks for the advice.

When a HLR transmission runs with low hot pressures and the adjustments are correct it usally means one thing, its time for a complete trans overhaul. Get your checkbook out and be prepared for sticker shock at the parts bill.
