Had a mishap yesterday and just want to remind you guys at least the ones in the north about moving track equipment in the winter. I work with and move crawlers everyday but sometimes you do things and are in a hurry and you don't think. I had a JD350C come in yesterday and its for parts doesn't run so went to pull it off with a chain as soon as it started to move it went side ways slide off the trailer and plopped on its side, didn't even move a foot was moving slow and it happened in a heart beat! No one was hurt no one was in the machine, but did remind me of how fast something could go wrong when you don't expect it.Don"t know what i'd do different, hauler won't like salt spead on his trailer. So be Careful out there this winter season.

Around here--upstate NY--- some of the highway departments use rubber snow plow blades on the wing plow to keep it from digging up the shoulders and lawns before the ground freezes. Once frozen, they go back to the steel blades. I have a half a dozen used rubber blades that were given to me and they make excellent pads under the dozer --on the trailer--crossing roads etc. They are 10 or 11 feet long, 6 or 8 inches wide and 1 1/2 inches thick. John NY.

Just be careful using any kind of mats, particularly if the deck or ramps are frosty. I've had the mats and the dozer slide! It's like putting the dozer on a toboggan! As mentioned above, use the cat litter, or I use coarse sand....works well. I always backed the dozer on and kept the blade as low as possible to catch me in case I slid off the ramps. Yep, the cold season calls for extra care! Cal

Just seen some photos of a Cat d6 high track being unloaded with no rops on it.Looked to be brand new being delivered at a place in the Philipines? Tractor was backed off trailers tail looked to be on some cribbing.Pictures are of the dozer completely upside down resting on the operator needless to say he didn't make it crushed his head on the hood of the unit the rest of his body didn't appear to be crushed.Pictures are of a crane lifting it off him.Very disterbing photos for a person that has 5 Allis Chalmers Hd5's with no rops.Anyone out there seen these photos ? location ? details ?

Sort of sounds like what my neihbor did a couple years ago. We had an ice storm and he had the idea of useing his dozer to brake up the ice on the hill, part of the driveway. Will the dozer he had, had 24 inch tracks and about the size of a D6 or D8 cat. Well he started down the hill which was covered with ice and slide all the way to the bottom of the hill. At the bottom you have to turn left well he could turn since he was slideing. He did get lucky just before he had to turn he got the blade down enough to stop the machine. When he got the my house he told me about what happend and he said he needed to go change his pants because of what had happened

Ben there. Guy down the road has race cars got a couple old wide race car tires and cut the side walls out cut the tread across made for a pretty long piece lay them on the ramps and up on to trailer. I do this year round for two reasons.Very seldom do the slip and also saves on the wood deck. But what ever you do just stop, think, and be very careful!!! Have a merry christmas and god bless you all.

I have operated Dozers for 31 years and do agree that when the cold weather comes the steel is very slippery, I was at a distance being shown the work to be done one day when the float operator was unloading a Cat D5 high track...three foot pads, He barely moved a foot and it slid right off over the side....The three foot pads saved it from going over on it's side....We just backed it off one track on the float the other on the ground, Float was tilted vert slight.....DO be care full....Brian.

That is scary. I'm a novice and use my JD 450c around my property. I load it occasionally on my metal flatbed trailer. It sure slips easy on that metal and I think that one day it will slide off with me on it. It also uses metal ramps to get on and off. Should I deck the top and ramps with wood or something?

This was a wood deck trailer Just slicker then we figured.Rubber matting or mud flaps may have helped. First ice of the season i guess just a wake up call.

Been moving dozers and excavators on lowboy trailers for years and the best thing I"ve used is kitty litter or oil dry. Scattered liberaly on the trailer floor and ramps. Its easy to clean up and harmless to the floor. But you still have to BE CAREFUL and use common sense. Also recognize that cold steel cold wood do not mix. Clay
