I believe i have what you need as i accumlated parts for the same project. I have a continental 162 running motor coupled to a 2 speed (both 2 speed in fordward and reverse) automatic transmission. This unit came out of a militays aircraft tug. Also I have a forklift rear (or front as case may be) axel with reduction on outboard, I am not going to build this project and wouls sell all for $1000.00 Located in south west wy 30 miles from scottsbluff neb.

Would parts and pieces from one of these if you could find one fit
into your project?

There is a picture at the link below of an Otter crawler power train, it will give you an idea how to go with manual drive.

That's an ambitious project. Dual path hydrastatic (2 pumps and 2 motors) would be the best and easiest choice for transmission but need some engineering so you get the right speed and torque for proper pushing power. Hydraulics don't come cheap! Don't want to put a damper on your project but you might be better off finding an older skid steer and converting it to a crawler if you need more floatation or traction. In my opinion a skid steer loader has one of the best power to weight ratios of any equipment made and they are a lot faster than a crawler unless you want to spend a lot of money. Hope this helps. I saw that home built crawler a couple of years ago..Isn't it amazing how much time some folks have.. I think the article said 2000 or more hours invested in it ..It is a heck of a sweet project..I put my service truck away hoping to work on my WM300 Power Wagon..It's been so mild , I've been going out with my Silverado pick-up doing service calls..Looks like WM300 sits till later..

Yep..It's the old body style with the massive flat front fenders and the fold to the center hood...Looks like a '49...Some were WM-300 others were W300M...But they were the same beast..Mine is a '65 still running a 251 cu.in. flathead 6 and has 12 volt electricals..I drove it years ago sans brakes on a deserted road at a breathtaking 51 MPH..Exilerating experience...

My W200 Powerwagon broke last month - won't turn left anymore. I've been using it across my fields and in the woods - but it really takes some planning to get around. I have to make a awful lot of three-point-turns since it only turns right. I've been trying to find time to fix it. But . . . what is the "M" WM300 for -is it military?

I would stongly consider hydrostatic drives for a mini crawler because of improved traction and you avoid all the mechanical components such as clutches, brakes, etc. A conventional crawler steers by disengaging one track. A hydrostatic maintains power to both tracks at all times and steers by varying the speed of the individual tracks. You can even have one track going forward and the other in reverse for tight turns. There also seems to be some good rubber tracks available.

Hi; Try a google search for STRUCK or DAHLCO. Steruc Kit used to make plans available for several different sizes of mini crawlers, dozers, loaders and backhoes
I may have some of the old plans, but if so they are buried in my attic and it will take a few days to find them.

I'm building one out of a old trenching machine. A ditch witch It is hydraulic drivin and already has a blade. It came with a wisconson but i bought it without motor so i don't know what i will use maybe a little diesel Kubota or komatsu All it has to do is run a pump very simple.

thanks, but you need a hydraulic design you can't just pump you need the right pump for your motors and the right motors for your pump. horse power required = flow rate (gpm) x system pressure (psi) x % pump efficiency.

Easy to figure on a machine that already has hydraulics and a shop and parts manual I don't because all that is missing is the motor the pump is still there and plumed in. The motor are 18-24 hose, either way i'm just saying there are lots of these old trencher out there and it looks like a good cheap start.
