Hi, I have recently purchased a 1982 or 83 3cx (I am not sure of the year but I seen 1983 stamped into the casting near the king pin – it may be from a different machine). Before I bought it I tested the toque drive by first staring off in 4 gear and the machine moved off smoothly the I forced the front bucket into a pile of sand in 1st gear and the wheels started to spin. I have been driving it around 1 mile per day for the past 4 days to where I have been doing some back hoe work but today as I was moving around the site the machine would not go forward and only slowly in reverse. I checked it for fluid it was a little low but ok. I then tipped the torque housing (casting) under the machine with a soft hammer and the machine drove again for a few minutes but stopped again! The “clutch” pedel has not worked in this machine?
I would appreciate any help on this…. I bought this for a self build project… may be I should have hired a guy in ?
Thanks
Mart

Re: 82'-83' 3CX Oil Filler in reply to Mart, 12-19-2006 14:17:28
The fluid for the shuttle and torque convertor is the one,the filler and dipstick is in the one tube on the right side of the engine by the bellhousing, you can use the ordinary red ATF as for your car for the shuttle, level to be checked with engine running on low idle, the shuttle or torque does not have any filters, there is a strainer in the pan of the shuttle, the fluid has to be drained and the pan removed to get to it,the four speed gearbox coupled to the back of the shuttle, back axle and front axle if its 4x4 takes ordinary 90 gear oil, glad you were able to sort it without a teardown.
Good Luck & Happy Xmas

Your JCB will have a Borg Warner shuttle box,The fluid is checked with the engine running on low idle, with the engine stopped secure the machine and get a second person in the seat,go under the machine, get the other person to move the forward/reverse lever you will see the cable moving the F/R lever on the shuttle, check to see that the lever on the valve is moving into the dedent in both directions,ie there are three holes in the lever one to hold the lever in forward, one neutral and reverse, get the person to press the clutch pedal, you will see a plate that moves and push the forward/reverse valve in,on the end of the valve is a 1/4 bolt 7/16 head size, there should be .010" clearance between the head of the bolt and the plate that pushes it,if not loosen the locknut and set it at the .010",what that valve does is when you select forward/reverse fluid under pressure squeeses the clutch pack together causing it to drive, when the pedal is pressed it lets the fluid escape and the clutch disengages, check that the valve returns to the full out position,it is spring loaded to return but it can stick, that adjustment is the only adjustment on the shuttle, the most likely thing to be wrong if the valve adjustment is correct is that what is called the belelville spring is broken inside the forward clutch pack, the shuttle will have to be removed to replace it,the Borg Warner shuttle is very similar to the one fitted to the Case 580 machines up to 89, go to the link below you will see a parts list for the Case shuttle, item #9 is where the cable connects to the valve on the first page, item 49 on page 2 is the belelville spring it is a concave spring.hope the adjustment get you out of trouble.

Hi AJ, did that worked a dream thanks very much.

one more question... where do you add/refill in the fluid into the torque box? what sort of oil should I use.

Many thanks
