I am considering buying a 480D Case backhoe. The machine has two issues that I need advise on. First it does not have brakes. How difficult are the brakes to get to? Second the entire hydraulic system is weak but there is considerable strain on the engine when a cylinder is bottomed out. If the engine is idling at say, 1000 rpm, the engine will go dead. The engine seems to have plenty of power and there is no smoke. What would be a decent price for a machine like this with 2,300 hours?I know about tractors but know very little about Case backhoes. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Any machine will die down or even stall at low idle with the cyclinder at the end of its stroke. As long as it not dying down under static pressure. As far as brakes I have never tackled any on a tractor.I'm sure you could handle the brakes.I remeber when I told the boss the 5 yard loader had no brakes, and he said he didnt pay me to stop .

I'm am no expert, but it seems like those two issues shouldn't be happening with those releatively low hours. We typically have run Cat & Deere backhoes for utility work and don't remember brakes that frequently. Hydraulics could be the usual issues, change filters all the way to more serious pump issues. Not much help I know. Have you tried calling a Case construction equipment dealer? They should be able to give you an estimate of cost to repair in thier shop, or parts cost estimate. They might even be familiar with the machine you are looking at.

Thanks--swms301--That is my thoughts also.I dought if the filters have ever been changed! I don't know this for sure but I have found this to be the case many times in older tractors. If I buy the machine, filter and fluid change change will be the first thing I do. As far as the brakes are conserned, I don't know. THANKS
