Can you change the front crankshaft seal on a late 70s Td 15 with the engine and radiator still in the machine?^ 6 cyl. motor. Sorry I dont have more info right now. Is it just a lip seal on the end of the crank? It looks like all you do is remove the harmonic balancer and pop in a new one. Ive never worked on one before but Ive worked on lots of John Deeres and nothing is easy on those. Also what books will I need to maintain this machine?

Late 70's td15 would be the c series with the dt466 engine - yes you can. Pull the front dampner off - may need a puller to get it the seal is in the front of the oil pump cover wich bolts onto the fron cover of the engine. get the seal and the 2 orings for the oil pump so you can take off to get seal in easier. Put a little #2 permatex on the inside of dampner when you put it back on.

Thanks for the reply. There was a bolt missing from a front cover. After running the machine for a couple hrs. It has a lot of blow by. So I know Ive got troubles.I will probably look for a good used motor in the near future. Ill get some numbers up shortly .

Those engine will have some smoke come out the breather especillay if it still has the breather on the block. As long as it is not slobbering oil just watch it. It is a simple engine to rebuild - it has wet sleeves so sleeves come int and out without puller just put in new pistons and sleeeves.

is there a front mounted hydraulic pump thats leaking?

You should goto redpowermagazine.com forums then construction equipment, the experts there can answer anything on those machines.

Wow that was a quick response Thank you. Im glad I found this message board.I will probably use it quite a bit. One more thing I want to add to my post. Is there any thing else on the front of the motor that would let it blow out a lot of oil besides the crank seal? Its really a oil mess up there the fan is picking it up and blowing it all over. So its hard to tell exactly where its comming from. My first guess was the crank seal. I just got this dozer and man what a powerhouse it seems to be. The undercarrage is 95% and the tranny seems strong.Any particulars anyone wants to discuss about this machine that I should know? Most of my friends that would know about this machine are dead and gone. I guess we are the old guys now...

Another thing you might want to consider is the possibility of wet-sleeve cylinder liner pitting due to the combined effects of corrosion and cavitation erosion. That has been known to happen on high-hour wet-sleeve IH's (I had it happen on a high hour wet sleeve Deere) and the IH's often had a water filter to condition the coolant and reduce the risk of corrosion and cavitation. See if the machine has a water filter and if you can, whether the filter was maintained. Water in the oil is a sign that there might be wet-sleeve pitting.

We have a TD15 with a leak up front -before you condem the crank seal check about half way up on left front engine block. there is a vent that spews oil if the engine is worn and has blowby. It will leak more or less depending on the angle you are working! Our's is good for a Quart + an hour!
