1982 JCB 3C 1400 - Stuck Engine

Hello,

I was plowing some snow the other day when the JCB 4/98 Leyland started to feel sluggish and under powered. Just as I was reaching to pull the fuel cutoff it quit. It won't turn over now and I've taken the inspection plate off the torque converter and tried turing the engine by prying on the ring gear, it won't budge. However when you hit the key and engage the starter, you can see the fan move ever so slightly.

Any ideas? Any suggestions to break the engine loose if it is seized? The oil was good, the coolant was good, no sign of overheating etc.

Thanks.

Take the oil filter out and see if there are any metal flakes in it which would suggest bearing failure,if the filter has no metal in it the next thing I would do is remove the rocker cover, look for a valve that is not returning or one that has no clearance which would suggest its broken and could be jamming a piston,if an engine jams up when it had been running suggests a failure of some sort,I am in the UK and JCBs are very common here, problem is that they named different,so from the 1400 number I would need the year but I think with it having a Leyland engine it pre 1980,they used that engine for 20 years so its hard to know what is the equivalent model here if yours is a manual drive try it with the clutch pedal depressed in case the problem is in the transmission,if its got a torque then it will be in the engine, another thing to look at would be the shaft that drives the hydraulic pump, its a short shaft with two UJs on it from the front engine pulley to the pump,if a joint broke it could jam up the crankshaft, try to find out what is causing it to be jammed as forcing it will only make it worse.
Good luck
AJ

Thanks ajk, in desperation the day it quit I called a mobile heavy duty mechanic to come have a look, he took a cross section from the oil filer, squeezed it out in a vice and was able to find but 1 tiny piece of metal, there was however several tiny pieces of aluminum.

I was wondering if the pump you speak of could be seized. That could perhaps prevent the engine from cranking if it is?

According to the paperwork for the machine, it is a 1982 with a Leyland 4/98NT.

There are some photos of it here:

I'll take a look at the items you suggest before any further action.

Thanks again.

That machine here in the uk is a 3CX Mk1, its bad news having the metal/aluminum flakes in the oil filter and it suggests that it has run a bearing, you can disconnect the drive shaft to the hydraulic pump and see if it free, its only four bolts and it looks as you will be taking them out anyway to pull the engine, but you may have a sized hydraulic pump so its worth checking,if the hydraulic pump is free take the oil pan off the engine and have a look at the crank and bearings,if the crank is damaged you will have to remove the engine and have the crank reground.
Good Luck.

Thanks ajk, I'll take a look and it's good to know the model number in the UK.
