I need to replace the starter solenoid on my JD450c dozer and I have a couple of questions I need help with. Do I have to remove the starter to remove the solenoid? Will I need to replace the solenoid as a whole or just the bad parts? Also is the John Deere place going to be the best source of parts or can the solenoid be purchased somewhere else? I appreciate any help that is offered.
Thanks,
RussT

Deere used to be the cheapest on new solenoids - but probably not anymore. Back when I last worked at a Deere dealership ca. 1991 - a new Delco solenoid was $9 from Deere and $16 from NAPA. It comes off like the other guy state - with that size Delo starter - they all have lock-tangs and must be rotated a 1/4 turn. You can buy a solenoid repair kit for around $8 from NAPA that comes with new contacts, disk and cap. If you don't break anything, you might be able to just reverse the old parts and you won't need any new parts. If you buy a new solenoid somewhere - make sure you use the old spring that's in there now. That solenoid fits gas and diesel starters - but the diesel calls for a different return-spring. Usually, if a new spring comes in the box it's for a gas.

You do not have to remove the starter. Unhook the wires and starter current supply bar and remove the two screws holding the solonoid to the starter. Some solonoids have a lip that holds them to the starter body and you have to give the solonoid a 1/4 turn to remove it, not sure with the 450 starter. I just had my starter off my 450C and took it to a shop and had it rebuilt. They replaced everything, brushes, bushings, drive, midplate, and solonoid for $65. Money well spent. By the way if you remove your starter its a real challange to get to the bolts. I'am replacing a frame rail, A major job in its self! so I decided to go thru the starter since its easy to get to with the rail off. You should be able to buy the solonoid at a NAPA or any auto parts store. Deere is going to get 2 times what NAPA will get for the same part.
