Starter went out and we're having a devil of a time figuring out how to remove it. The lower starter housing bolt is set between the starter housing and engine block, can't fit a socket & extension on it due to spacing.

How does the starter come off of this engine? Is there a special tool for the lower bolt?

I've done it many times without the correct tool - but here are two photos of two versions of the tool made for the job. One is an OTC wrench that Deere sold under # JDE80. It is single sided. The other, sold by Snap-On has two sides and works on many Deere starters and injection pumps. It is Snap-On # B4400.

a half moon wrench will work if you use a grinder & notch out under the boxend just right & also grind the boxend head so it is slimmer. then you can get 1/8th turn at a time. Didnt realize wrenches like these existed.

Thanks but I can"t do anything with the machine until I figure out how to loosen the lower starter bolt. Nothing I have fits back there. I don"t even see how a bent 9/16 wrench will do us any good.

The starter on a 4020 is kind of the same concept. You use a 9/16" wrench that is bent in a horseshoe shape. I just saw them at Sears not too long ago, and at another auto parts store. Also look in from the end, you should be able to put a couple extensions together with a 9/16" swivel socket as well.

If there is a I.D. plate it is below the seat between your legs

There is no such thing as a 1958 300 JD crawler. I assume you've got a 1966 or newer 350? Yes, the bottom nut/bolt takes a special 9/16" bent wrench. You can get it from Deere, OTC, Mac or Snap-On. Some people who don't own one, either bend a wrench thus making their own, or use a long screwdriver or chisel and simply knock it loose with a hammer.

Very good, will investigate.

I"m sure of the 3-cyl diesel and tracks. The front is a skip loader bucket and it originally came with a backhoe. Would love to know what we have.

If it's a crawler with a three-cylinder engine, it's a 350. It's the only three-cylinder crawler Deere made. Previous 1010 model made 1960 was a four-cylinder.

Thank you, this is very helpful.

While I have your ear.. :o)

The tractor's right brake hasn't worked since we bought it several years ago. We steer with the left brake by going forwards/backwards. What is involved in repairing a brake?

Could be a simple linkage and brake-band adjustemt or require a major tear-down.
