Got a question or two about my Deere 450C transmission. I bought this dozer last summer. I run it for a half hour or so before buying it digging holes and everything worked fine exept a frame rail was starting to crack but price was right. I parked it in the shed and didn't run it much, wanted to replace the rail first. Well I finally got the new rail in Friday and changed all fluids and filters. Everything was good, no metal shavings, cracks, broken bolts ect, just minor oil leaks. So I took it out and grubbed some brush and was digging a hole (no frost in MN in Jan!) to bury some junk. I backed up the side of the hole to take a final pass, put it in low and nothing, no movement in any gear. Checked linkage everything was ok so I got back on put it in gear and it worked but would slip in all gears by holding the footbrake. So today I went thru the trans adjustments according to Roy and manual and it seemed to shift good but the pressure was a little low 160 psi. Only thing I couldn't seem to get was repeatabilly. I would get the pressure to raise a few psi with moving the petal a bit then cycle the petal and it would be off again. Well I was loseing light so I put it back together, seemed to work well, could kill the motor with brakes so I backed it 100 yards to the shed. Before the shed I have to go down a small grade. It seemed to freewheel and now its back to slipping when I brake it with the foot brake. Any ideas or do you think its overhaul time like I do? Rest of dozer works perfect, Less than 700 Hrs on new Deere factory long block 239 in 2000 and 80% undercarrage and tight 6 way blade with no non factory welds . Sorry for the long post.

Sounds like you will need to replace the roll pin on the clutch actuating shaft that actually moves the clutch spool up and down..Top cover needs to come off , lube line that goes to the ring gear , 2 5/16" bolts that secure the upper part of the control valve to the main part of the valve..I use a strong magnet under the lever , tap the roll pin into the magnet, Drive in a new one, put 'er back together and adjust the HLR....It's a weak point in the linkage..

That would sure would give the symptoms I'am having with the pressures being all over the place every time the machine is operated after adjustment. That adjustment sure affects the HLR operation, a turn or two in either direction and the pressure drops to nothing. With my luck the pin on the front of the shaft is loose to, have to pull motor to get to that one. I have a few other progects I've got to get done before I can tear into this again but in a month or so I'll post back with my findings. While I'am at it do you think I should give the pressure regulator a penny to boost the pressure up from 160 to 175 or so? or just leave good enough alone?

The pin on the front is a groove pin not a roll pin..They do come loose but don't break..I've used pennies for many years..Each one is good for about 10 lbs..Do this after you do the pin and re-adjust HLR..
