Sorry if I've posted this twice.
Will be retiring. Wish to start small (very small) buisness doing small land clearing and maybe some basement work. Currently have a JD55A which I'm trading/selling for something bigger and fewer hours. Questions:
1) Dozer versus crawler loader?
2) How big and what?
3) Small jobs only and don't want to be insurance poor. Not interested in sub contractor work unless I know them. Fence rows and small ponds. What do I need to protect myself from liability but still be able to make some money.
4) I can operate and maintain my own equipment but have no experence in grading to grade as in construction but can learn. What do I need to stay away from.
5) I live in a county in missouri which is experenceing rapid growth. Everyone who moves here wants fencerows and trees cleared plus a small pond. In the neiboring county which is St. Charles, you can't do anything without DNR and a host of other agency's permits. Out here they just do it. Small jobs that is.
Any insight from those who have been there done that would be appreciated.

Myassitis

I'm a huge fan of crawler loaders. You can reach up and push trees over, grade, dig ditches (so long as there aren't any sharp corners), load trucks and there not that heavy. I float my Case around with a ten ton float and a one ton truck. parts are easy to get and it's relatively easy to fix. simple to operate. A D6 is much bigger then what I run but mine does the same kind of work your talking about. good luck.

Thats something to think about but I have one big problem. I"m totally facinated with big equipment. Having cleared my farm with the JD555A
I"m thinking on the lines of a D6 Blade or a older 953 bucket.

You might be better off with a larger skid steer. If the trees are small enough, a skid steer will work. Cats take a lot of experience to get the job to look like you want. Cats can make a big mess in a hurry as well. Dave

a track skidsteer that takes a 6 way blade a even better. Can always get post hole diggers, brushhogs etc. to fit & diversify.
