I have just bought a JD310A Backhoe and it definitley has some issues. Oil seeps in a stream out of the front seal. Oil also streams out crankcase ventilation tube. It will not start with the hydraulic pump hooked until the engine has been ran and warmed up. It doesn't smoke excessively and no knocks in the engine. Is the engine just wore out. If so where is the cheapest place for either engine parts or a long block. Hopefully someone knows of something else to try first. Any help is appreciated.

Oil streaming out the breather tube is often a sign of a failed injector pump shaft seal. This allows diesel fuel into the crankcase. It dilutes the engine oil and causes the engine to "make oil". If the oil level rises with engine operation, this is definitely one of your problems.

The seals are not expensive. They are a little tricky to replace, as they tend to turn inside out as the pump is installed. Once you learn how to do it, it isn't hard at all.

This was a problem with my JD310D, with its Roosa-Master/Stanadyne injector pump. I'm not sure what the 310A used.

Thankyou very much for your reply. I should have the backhoe here in a few days and I will monitor the oil level. Did the crankcase actually fill up to the point that it ran oil out, or was it, as the level rose it was able to force it up the rest of the way?

As I mentioned in the email, the oil level didn't actually rise high enough for oil to literally run out the breather tube, but the level was high enough to drown the crank throws in the oil/diesel mix. The resulting ferocious windage and splashing as the crank spun sloshed oil out the breather tube, amoung other places.
