Hi Guys,
Been reading up on the posts, my 350b will not start. Brand new (still shiny) selenoid, 12.5 volts on battery plus battery pack and no start. She's started fine a number of times with new selenoid. I'm thinking neutral switch?? I insert key, turn key and then guages move and I hear clicking (I think it's the hour meter?), I push button and nothing. I hold button in and jiggle gear shifter to be sure in neutral and still nothing. I've got reverser (just rebuild), demaris I noticed in a prior post you diferentiated between reverser and non -reverser. Any diagnostic help would be a appreciated, any quick way to rule out neutral switch? If so, how do I jump it? Thanks all again,
Joel

Joel,

I don't own a JD, but the neutral switch is just that, a switch. All you have to do is pull the plug off of it and put a wire down in the two connectors inside the plug. In essence, the jumper wire is becoming the switch.
This of course is providing the neutral switch "makes" when it's in neutral and is open when it is not.

Dave

My straight 350 does the same sometimes, I can reach down and wiggle the wires @ the neutral safety switch and it fires right up. I haven't repaired it because I can reach it while sitting in the seat (long arms!) and it helps prevent unauthorized use!

Several potential trouble spots on the 350. The neutral-safety switch on top of the transmission. It has a slide-on connector that can cause trouble and the switch itself can wear. It is shimmed - so sometimes you can pull it out, remove the shims, and reinstall and get it to work. Also, the large wire-harness connector under the hood sometimes gets corroded or comes loose. It's just under the the hood seam where the hood meets the cowl. On some older 350s, we'd just cut the wires at the harness and crimp new ones in when the push-connect terminals got real bad.

Thanks all for the responses, I'll dig into it either one night this week or first thing saturday.
Anxious to get her fired up, move her around and then tie back handles to avoid clutch sticking.
Agian, many thanks,
Joel

Thanks for the response, the clicking happens when I turn the key to on, when I push the starter button nothing happens at all.
I'll start going through the wires tonight.
Wondering if there is an easy way to jump the neutral switch in order to determine if that's the problem or not.
Thanks,
Joel

Thanks to all, was the neutral switch, unhooked, tied the wires together, and then fire in the hole. She starts and runs great, even in coldest days. Thanks everyone.
I"ll pull the neutral switch when it gets warmer out and see if I can fix, if not, will just replace.
Joel
